Cosmosol, Where Sustainability Meets Innovation

Innovating with nitrogen, bio-based ingredients and post-consumer recycled materials, these are the in-depth insights published on the latest edition of World Aerosols narrating how Cosmosol is looking ahead to a sustainable future. 

Since 1987, Cosmosol designs and manufactures high-quality aerosol products with a complete range of spray and dispensing. The market application covers a variety of product forms, from aerosols foam to water mist spray and pump dispensing products for personal care & cosmetics, perfumery, medical devices. Since the year 2000, Cosmosol has been travelling towards sustainability with the Bag-On-Valve (BOV) technology application to cosmetics products; since then, it’s an upwards journey that involves a constant improvement and infinite dedication. Driven by the ethical believes outlined in the Code of Ethics, in 2020 Cosmosol laid the foundations for a further step forward in the company sustainable organization, an ambitious sustainability program with targets for 2025. The CARE program which stands for Conscious Aerosol Research for the Environment builds on the momentum and progress from Cosmosol’s new plant implementation. Cosmosol made remarkable investments in the last years, focused on a well-defined strategy. All areas were covered by nearly EUR 20 million of investment: mixing and manufacturing, storage of fuels and solvents, storage of packaging and finished goods, security systems, laboratories, offices, and the entire infrastructure. The annual capacity has been increased up to 55 million with compressed gas propellant products and 25 million of traditional aerosols.

The Cosmosol’s goal is to become a European level player but with a new concept of aerosol. Sustainability is one of Cosmosol’s most important driver of innovation: For this reason, its focused their efforts on ecological propellants such as compressed air and nitrogen while maintaining the philosophy of traditional aerosol products. With the CARE program Cosmosol have shared the goals through targeted actions, and involving their collaborators in the same commitment, inspiring customers and suppliers, aware that only by sharing the same intentions and actions it will be possible to maximize the positive impact on the society and lead the industry towards the aerosol of the future.

Researchers at the Laboratory are constantly working for the creation of effective formulas which are consistent with the company’s ideals of sustainability, and of course with customers’ demand.”

The ingredients in Cosmosol are selected from contents of natural origin, eco-certified, eco-sustainable and organic when possible and we always prefer ecofriendly propellant such as Nitrogen or compressed air as propellant of our products. Cosmosol is already Natrue and RSPO (SG and MB) certified and is aiming to achieve the Cosmos certification as part of the Program plans. 

Nitrogen and Compressed Air as propellant allows Cosmosol’s products to lead the way to a responsible consumption and circular economy. Cosmosol’s choice to replace the LPG propellant with an inert propellant as nitrogen will produce safer aerosols products both for for the environment and for the consumers, while reduces the production and emission of hydrocarbons (such as LPG) and VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds), helping to transform the creation, distribution and use of aerosol. This choice also brings another advantage in terms of sustainability: the amount of base (liquid phase) present in products with nitrogen is greater than that present in a product with traditional propellants. This implies that it is possible to reduce the size of the cans used, having in any case the same, or longer, duration. By reducing the size of the cans, less aluminum is needed to produce it and, consequently, the carbon footprint of the packaging is reduced. Furthermore, by reducing the size of the cans, it is possible to transport more products at a time, reducing the number of trucks on the road. Finally, nitrogen products would also reduce the impact of the final waste by reducing the weight of the exhausted cans.

While stepping into 2021, the first year of Sustainability Program, Cosmosol is boosting the innovation of eco-designed and circular-economy products, pursuing the ambitious environmental targets addressed at energy consumption and carbon emissions reduction. About this, the parthenship with Salvalco is exciting and fits with Cosmosol’s sustainability ambitions for a positive future. The partnership began in 2019 in order to support further research and commercialization of the patented Eco-Valve technology across the global aerosol industry, while strengthening Cosmosol’s sustainability credentials. All of Cosmosol’s suppliers are investing in extensive research and development to bring the world’s answer to more environmentally friendly and safer aerosols to market. Today we were pleased to know that one of the personal care giant invested in this technology, confirming that the investment follows the launch of new aerosol products which uses ecologically sustainable propellants.

“In the market shelf we are more and more used to hear word as “green” and “biologic”, but what products are deep in the argument? How many aerosol products could call sustainable? In Cosmosol we are daily working in innovation and sustainable concept.” unveil Chiara Cavalletti Key Account. She continued “Cosmosol develops products addressed to recyclability, reduce&replace models as the one launched for one important private label on the German market.” The product is a natural deodorant who use nitrogen as propellant, completely bio-based and vegan consisting of organic ingredients and essential oils which allowed to award the Natrue certification. Moreover, the packaging uses Post-Consumer-Recycled (PCR) Aluminum by 95%. The possibility to have the PCR aluminum cans allow to cut by 95% the production emission if compared with standard aluminum cans. 

Now Cosmosol is in the final step of developing a new concept in antiperspirant deodorant based on a patented formula with nitrogen as propellant. This concept could bring a revolution into the spray antiperspirant market enabling to this products category the possibility to have a sustainable packaging (PCR alu can, small size and lightweight waste), a sustainable product (natural, gentle with skin but strong on sweat, Natrue or Cosmos Compliant) and lastly a sustainable propellant (inert, not flammable and VOC free).
